My computer won’t even let me spell it with an s. And that is how I know the writer is British when I see the s used. If we overlook the various words that the Americans deliberately choose to spell differently, the majority of words that take a ‘z’, or an ‘s’ that is pronounced like a ‘z’, seem to fall very clearly into those that must take an ‘s’ (like compromise, where the derivation is –misser), those that must take a ‘z’, (like prize), and the rest, about which controversy apparently rages (if only here). I've noticed most words like organize spelled with the z rather than s. I'm even starting to see American habit of dropping the dash in words like coordination instead of co-ordination (cooperation instead of co-operation) which is how I was taught in school. The voiced Z sound (IPA symbol: z) can be found in English words such as z ip, e x ist, bu zz, boy s, hi s, wa s, and i s. Both of these sounds are produced in the front part of your mouth.
But America is difficult to ignore, especially where we have adopted more economical forms of words, such as program instead of programme. The “BC” used in texting is not referring to the calendar year as in “4000 BC.” Instead, it is a shortened version of the word “because.” “I don’t want to go bc (because) I don’t like scary movies.” PLZ/PLS; This abbreviation stands for the word “please.” It can be spelled with either a “z” or a “s.”
