The 7,472-acre Headwaters Forest Reserve (Reserve) was established in 1999 after a decade-long grassroots effort to protect the world’s last unprotected, intact, old-growth redwood forest ecosystem. Northern Section: Public access into the Headwaters Forest Reserve is from the northwest portion, along the Elk River County Road, approximately six miles southeast of Eureka. Particularly the old-growth redwood stands that provide habitat for the threatened marbled murrelet, and the stream systems that provide habitat for threatened coho salmon. This grove is also the home of several hundred species of companion plants. It's a location that looks straight out of a fairytale, and you'll want to see it for yourself. Comprised of 7,472 acres, Headwaters Forest Reserve is home to a rich ecosystem filled with old-growth redwoods, ferns, historic structures, and meandering trails. Some are 300 feet high and 2,200 years old. We drove to the Headwaters Forest Reserve via Elk River Road, Eureka, CA 95503 from Hwy 101. One of the most famous redwood groves is a 7,400 acre (3,000 hectare) undeveloped area called Headwaters Forest Reserve. Several threatened species call the Reserve home, including coho salmon, the northern spotted owl, and the marbled murrelet.

This untouched redwood grove near Fortuna contains the world's most spectacular ancient trees. Acquired in 1999, the Headwaters Forest Reserve is the newest and probably the last-ever large tract of old-growth redwoods to be acquired for preservation.
