The most basic level of Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs covers physiological needs. This study examined the relationships between needs being met and student success and looked at attributes contributing to student success.

Maslow subsequently extended the idea to include his observations of humans' innate curiosity. Now, this is something that’s really important, but I feel like is often glossed over in nursing school, or we don’t understand exactly how to use it or how important it is. Maslow's hierarchy of needs as a framework for factors contributing to successful outcomes may assist in the identification of potential barriers and facilitators to successful academic performance in a nursing program (Adams & Gilman, 2002; Jenkins, 2009; Maskey, 2009; Maslow, 1954; Sweet, 2009).

Adapting Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs.
Abraham Harold Maslow was a psychologist who studied positive human qualities and the lives of exemplary people. Each student has needs that must be met in order to maximize learning.
In this level, students need to identify with other students and need to feel that they fit in. The most fundamental and basic four layers of the pyramid contain what Maslow called “deficiency needs” or “d-needs”: esteem , friendship and love, security, and physical needs. In this theory, higher needs in the hierarchy begin to emerge when people feel they have sufficiently satisfied the previous need.
